Helicopters

The client was a European Helicopter Operator in charge of maintaining and operating a fleet of 15 helicopters mainly used for construction and maintenance of Power Lines. The client hired Oliver Wyman CAVOK to assist them in the definition of a new Helicopter Maintenance Strategy that would help them face the recent increase and diversification of his activities.

Oliver Wyman CAVOK organized benchmark sessions with other helicopter operators to gather a maximum of performance data points and best practices on the market plus used internal IC. In parallel, we led ~20 interviews with collaborators from the client to understand the organization and processes of the Maintenance and gather their thoughts about its strengths and weaknesses. The last step was to identify a series of levers applicable to the client to help him improve its maintenance and evaluate the efficiencies that could be created.

The client had very little data concerning his activities and our first impact was to provide him with a clear and fact-based view of the performance of its Maintenance. The second key impact was that we provided the client with ~35 levers and a clear roadmap about how to improve the performance of its Maintenance activities, with a potential impact of 1.2M€ of efficiencies (i.e. ~15% of the total Maintenance costs).

Helicopter maintenance optimization lever benchmarks as well as our past experiences have allowed us to identify 40 levers potentially applicable to customer maintenance.
